The Beast (Fixer-Uppers, #3) by Denise Daye Review + BLOG TOUR

I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the THE BEAST by Denise Daye Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. Check out my post and make sure to enter the giveaway!

ABOUT THE BOOK

He's a cold-blooded killer, devilishly hot and wildly dangerous.

Most people would tell me I'm crazy. Most people would call him a monster and tell me to run. But in the broken world I live in, that's the only sort of man I want.

When he found me in a puddle of blood, at the mercy of my mobster husband's thugs, I was ready to die. I just looked at him with empty eyes, giving him permission to keep walking and never glance back. But instead, he told me to look away and then took care of business. My nails dug into his steel-hard arms as he carried me to his car and declared I was now his.

Of course I knew who my dark knight was.

Andrei f$$$ing Kowtisch.

Feared assassin. Merciless beast. A man who fights fire with fire.

I guess that means it's payback time, because nobody touches Andrei's property. Unless you're the most dangerous mobster on the East Coast who swore to get me back no matter the cost . . .

REVIEW

This is a spoiler-free review! I have received a review copy in exchange for my honest review.

For anyone that knows me, I love a good dark mafia romance book. The tension, the taboo, and the high stakes catch that always causes some trouble. The Beast is no different, and delivers a suspenseful story about Elise, a mobster's wife on the run, and Andrei, the deadliest assassin being hunted by the CIA. The synopsis had me hooked from the start, and I could not wait to get into their story. While this is the third installment in the Fixer-Uppers series, it can be read as a standalone.

The smut is definitely present, but it does not overpower the plot of the story -- we have a pretty solid combination of the two, which made the progression of the book work smoothly, as well as giving Elise and Andrei time to get to know one another. Angst can usually go south if not done correctly, by Daye was able to add the element into her book effortlessly as she transitions the story from will-they-won't-they to that they cannot live without one another.

Elise's story influences Andrei's, in the sense that without her, he would not have ended up with the ending that he received. Her very presence is a catalyst for him really discovering who he is and what he wants from the world. In the very same sense, Andrei's introduction into Elise's life is the saving grace she needed to get away from her abusive husband, and if not for a chance meeting in South Africa, both Elise and Andrei may be living very different lives.

Both characters are given their own stories that allow them to grow individually and together. The author does an excellent job showing that while when they are together, they thrive, but also when they are apart, they are able to work on themselves and reflect. I do wish that we would have had a little more time in between Elise and Andrei meeting each other and them advancing their relationship, but the pacing was on spot and did not make the reader feel as if they were pushed right into their story.

I loved the settings of this book -- since they were moving around a lot, we get to see a few different cultures and learn more about the areas compared to being set in only one location. Both Elise and Andrei get in depth backstories and character development as their story goes on, and it was nice to see that our main characters were not just thrust together randomly, but rather fell into place with one another at the perfect time for both of them.

If you are looking for a fast-paced, suspenseful mafia romance, then The Beast is the book for you. Daye provides a quick read filled with twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat and turning the pages until you've reached the end of the book.

Myracles in the Void (Myraverse, #1) by Wes Dyson Review + BLOG TOUR + GIVEAWAY

I would first like to thank Rockstar Book Tours for providing me with a copy of Myracles in the Void and having me be a part of the tour! I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the MYRACLES IN THE VOID by Wes Dyson Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. Check out my post and make sure to enter the giveaway!

"He used to say, 'a broken heart breaks all around it. Heal you, heal the world.'"

There once were two children,
a girl and a boy.
One could create,
the other, destroy.

Within every heart lies the power to bond or break.

On an isolated port of floating garbage called Hop, Gaiel Izz and his sister, Lynd, never imagined they’d be able to change anything…

Not their nasty neighbors, not their hungry bellies, and especially not their missing father.
That will change when they discover the power of myracles — magic that either creates or destroys.

As the brother and sister set across Esa to bring their family back together, this power will either unite them or shatter their entire world to pieces.

It will all come down to what truly lies within their hearts…

Create or destroy?

ABOUT THE BOOK

Title: MYRACLES IN THE VOID (Myraverse #1)
Author: Wes Dyson
Pub. Date: April 22, 2022
Publisher: WONDERLOVE
Formats: Paperback, eBook
Pages: 334

REVIEW

This book immediately reminds me of the movie Waterworld (1995) in the opening chapter. Following Gaiel's quest to have his family to be together again, we are thrust into a world where there is nothing much left. Their homes are made of whatever can be used and transformed into useful items, and those around them are not as trustworthy as you would hope.

Myracles in the Void is a relatively easy read, with world building that is not hard to follow once you have gotten in a few chapters. I do have to say that it does read more middle grade rather than young adult, which I was not expecting but it does not take away from the story if that was the mindset you were in when beginning to read. The sibling dynamic between Gaiel and Lynd is well-established and we are able to see their bond and how they interact with each other just how siblings argue and tease one another.

This is definitely a quick and easy read - you are able to read at a fast pace due to the dialogue that allows the characters to be in constant motion, and I did not find that the writing dragged on, but rather had a solid flow to the plot. You get to see both Lynd and Gaiel's point of views as they are separated from each other and experience their own journeys as they try to find their way back to each other and discover themselves.

It was interesting to see the world development between these characters, as they are on completely different journeys throughout the book. On one hand, we have Gaiel, who is searching for his sister, while continuing the search for his father, and on the other hand we have Lynd, whose memory of her life and family are gone and she learns about her abilities. With magic and adventure, these siblings must first discover something about themselves and make new acquaintances before they can find their way back to each other.

I would recommend this book to fans of Elora the Unknown - you can read my review here - and to those you enjoy more of an adventure genre, as well as books by Rick Riordan. It is definitely suitable for a younger audience as well, where readers as young as twelve should not have any trouble following along.

In this corner: Madison "Mad Dog" Bennett: Venture capitalist. Runs on instincts and caffeine. Fearless (unless it's love).

In this corner: Maurice "Murderface" Mayfield: Former MMA fighter, Eternal optimist. Has a collection of designer sneakers. Also collects crazy exes.

Sparks fly between Maddie and Mo when she invests in his MMA-themed gyms. But Mo is known for his flavor-of-the-month romances. Maddie thinks she's watching the clock run out on them when Mo's ex drops off a package - the son he never knew he had.

Maddie and Mo's wedding is interrupted, and Maddie thinks she must choose between flight or fight. Fighting is in her comfort zone, but love? Not so much. Working things through? Even less. It won't be an easy trip down the aisle.

EXCERPT

I let Mo draw the faux-fur blanket over us and wrap me in his arms.

“This is nice,” I said. “Hanging out with you is really nice.” It was the closest I’d gotten to expressing emotions in a long time.

“I could get used to this.”

“Me too. It’s really nice.” What the hell, Maddie? Didn’t I know any words other than ‘nice’?

My mouth engaged again, before my brain could search for synonyms. “I’m so lucky to have you in my life,” I gulped. “You saved me from the hell of the funeral. You’ve got so many good qualities – I could go on and on.”

“Please don’t stop on my account,” teased Mo. “You’re off to a good start.”

“Actually, that’s all I got.” I didn’t want to sound like I was at the “I love you, man” stage of drunkenness. We’d seen enough of that earlier. At least, I had.

“Okay.” Mo took a deep breath. “So, let’s discuss the next step. We’re business partners. We’re living together.  There’s only one more thing we can do. Let’s get married.”

“Wait, what?

Had I heard right? Of course I had. It just seemed a little soon.

“I know it seems a little soon,” continued Mo.

Told you so.

“But when you know, you know. The first time we worked out together, you were a champ. You looked me straight in the eye. You were fierce and you weren’t afraid to show it. You knew all about me and you were okay with it. It’s hard to find that in one person. Believe me, I’ve tried. And if you think I’m gonna let you go, you’re insane.” Mo started rubbing my back exactly how I liked to have my back rubbed.

This was getting much more difficult. There had to be a way to let him down gently.  I knew the words, but they wouldn’t come out of my mouth.

“You caught me off guard,” is what I said. “But I always trust my instincts. And they’re telling me to be all in. Ride or die.”

“Ride or die,” said Mo. He said other stuff, too. Then, things escalated and before long, I was invoking the Lord’s name. I do that in the heat of the moment. #sorrynotsorry

ABOUT RACHEL ABUGOV

Rachel is a recovering standup comic, former mental health admin, cat lady, foodie and lover of classic rock. She’s lived most of my life in Montreal, which is the Most Romantic City in North America.

She can't remember a time when she wasn't a reader, and therefore, a wannabe writer. Her first attempt at novel-writing was when she was 11, and she restarted in seriousness around four years ago.

Rachel writes women's contemporary fiction  - snarky but sweet (that means closed-door sex scenes but lots of sarcasm and  tons of schmoopiness) The longer she writes, the more her characters resemble facets of herself and echo her life experiences. She'll let you decide whether that's a Good Thing or not.
